Hard data on a hot topic is a touring laser physics experiment run by the atomic and molecular physics group at Durham University for National Science and Engineering Week 2010. Visiting several schools around the North-East of England, the experiment demonstrates the concept of polarimetry — measurement of the polarisation of light — and its applications in remote sensing. In particular, the experiment highlights a method for distinguishing ice and liquid water remotely: a use of remote sensing with important consequences in the field of climate science.
