Laser safety
The lasers used in this experiment are potentially dangerous if misused. You must follow these instructions at all times:
- Never switch on a laser unless:
- the laser is in its holder, attached to the optical board
- the apparatus is in the shielding box
- the beam alignment has been checked by a demonstrator
- Do not place your head near the experiment when the laser is running
- Do not reach in to the experiment (e.g. to adjust the analysing polariser) while wearing a watch or jewellery
- Do not point the laser outside of the box
Electrical and general safety
- Only turn on the power supply when properly connected to the Peltier cooler
- Always turn off the power supply current to the Peltier device before touching the terminals
- Be careful with the tools provided, some are quite sharp
- Be careful of objects and others when working in a darkened room
