Ultracold Ion and Electron Sources from Laser Cooled Atoms

The performance of ion and electron beams are largely determined by the properties of the source. By using laser cooled atoms as the source for ion and electron beams we can have great contol over the resultant beams. In our recent work we propose a fast and deterministic source of single cold ions from a dipole-blockaded atomic gas.
